Is Photojournalism Art?

Image
Photo by: Jacob Riss Year created 1870 Quality of Light:  In this image, I would say the lighting is engaging because as you look at the image you tend to get drawn by the different shades. For example, the background gives more light to the image's purpose which is to highlight the men in the picture and the conditions.  What feelings does the Image create:  As I look at this image I can feel a sense of intimidation. All the men are staring with serious faces and at any moment they can engage. The more you stare at the picture the more that you can learn what the image is representing. The feeling of the image is showing laborious men but it also in a way highlights poverty.  Obvious Main subject, about 1/4 to 2/3 of image area:  I will say that in this image I am not sure that I see one main object. The background along with the men all standing and staring is what gives the picture more impact. If the men were removed from the image I would look at it...

Pre-Digital Photographic

1A)  Picture By: Oskar Barnak  B) The photographic technology I chose to write about is the Leica 35mm. This camera was invented in the 1920s by Oskar Barnack. This camera was what helped journalists document World War II and it was what helped start journalism. The features of this camera were a huge upgrade from what photographers used before. John Wade in the Leica I: The camera that changed photography  " A 35mm movie frame size measured 18x24mm, with the film running vertically through the camera. But Barnack ran the film through his prototype horizontally, doubling one of the frame dimensions." This camera was different from the previous invention of photography because it enabled photographers and photojournalists to be able to travel with little equipment and take multiple films.  Photographers went from driving around a wagon that carried all of their equipment to being able to carry their cameras around and take multiple films. in this video,  Before T...

Can Photographs Change the World?

Image
1A)                        Photo by Andrew Medichini This photo has an impact on me because it shows how a video or an image on social media can bring awareness in the United States but also in many different countries. This image was taken in Europe after a video surfaced on social media about police brutality and how it caused a young man to lose his life. George Floyd was an innocent man who was killed at the hands of a cop. The awareness that the video along with the images shared on social media created a chain effect to protest against police brutality. Dan Gillmor in Ferguson's Citizen Journalist Revealed the Value of an Undeniable Video , " Law enforcement today too often violates the civil liberties of those they are sworn to protect." I chose this picture because to me this picture doesn't just show black African Americans protesting for our rights but it shows people of all races coming together. The power this image...

What is Photojournalism?

A  1) What impact does photojournalism have on small-town photojournalists?      The impact that photojournalism has in a small town is huge. This is because in small towns people tend to know each other more. This means that you have to be able to separate business from pleasure. The good thing about a small town is that you get to photograph your family and friends in their huge accomplishments. however, as with everything, there's a double side to everything. In this video of photojournalist Jason Henske says "It presents problems when I photograph a young man graduating and his achievements and two years later, I photograph his coffin coming home from Iraq" The impact that this must have on him has to be sad knowing that the same child you watch graduate, you now have to watch get buried.    2) What Risks do war photographers face when putting their lives in danger for an image?      The risks that photographers in wars face are not just...
