Photojournalism and Bias

B)  This image by Ed Clark is a very powerful image that shows a lot of emotions but as I stare at the image I see grief. The way the instrument is being played with so much emotion shows a man mourning a huge loss. After learning more about the image I can see the connection that the musician had with President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the emotions that His death brings. Showing us how he was a loved man and a good leader. Another thing I notice about the picture is his clothes. He looks like he is in the U.S. Navy and was part of the military.

C) When starring at the image the first three principles from photography that I notice are :

The Subject Expression:

The image shows us the emotion of the subject vividly, its also expressing how vulnerable and emotional the man playing the piano is while also showing the expression of others in the background. The image is also showing the body language of everyone that matches the emotions of the main subject, everyone looks upset, or sad showing us again a sad moment that happened in history when president Frankin D. Roosevelt Died.

Black and White:

The image is in black and white which to me shows a stronger impact. I believe that black and white images show more emotion and help grab your attention better because it creates a stronger focus on what is happening in the image and helps maintain focus on the true meaning of the photo which is grief.

What feelings does the Image Create:

The image creates a feeling of Grief, but to me also a feeling of strength, as the man is playing his instrument he is crying, but tears on't always mean weakness, he is still able to perform his duty and play the song even through the grief and the pain and that is a sign of strength.

This image represents the truth about photojournalism to me, that is because when looking at the image you can capture more than just pain, and agony you can see that even through their suffering they have found a way to smile, and also how beautiful the innocence of a child can be. To me, this image describes photojournalism because the art of it shows how you can still capture the pain of someone's suffering while also showing the true beauty of finding happiness even with pain. In the video "I want to live with Shahidul Alam he says "There are stories that I need to tell there are stories that need to be taken out, and we live in a very unequal world" this statement to me is important because I believe that thats exactly what photojournalism is about and sometimes we need to figure out a way to bring out the issues that are going on along with ensuring that no one is being dehumanized in the process. I think this image shows how awareness can be shown through an image without having to dehumanize others. In this video photojournalism and bias professor Nordell says " I wouldn't want to photograph somebody in a way I wouldn't want to be photograph" This is important because Photographers all have different bias and truth however, it is important to put ourselves in other people shoes and think "if someone did this to me how would I feel"

Photographic, Artistic, and compositional principles:

Obvious main subject: In this image the photojournalist I believe used an obvious main subject because he placed the two children in the middle of the picture and blurred out the background. He highlighted both kids and if they children were to be removed from the image then the image would not be impactful.

Background compliments or distracts from Composition:
The background in this image is out of focus giving the main object more focus and helping those looking at the image to focus on the main point of the image.

Abstraction:
The abstraction of this image is both representational and disceranble, that is because the image is showing the meaning of poor countries, along with the suffering and pain but also showing beauty by showing the children smile.

Photo by: Michelle Crameri Date: 2015

This image to me does not represent photojournalism, The reason it doesn't is because its a staged image that was edited and turned into something that is not. This image was captured by Michelle Crameri who staged this plus a few more images. To me it shows a lack of integrity along with a lack of talent. If you have to stage an image to tell a story then its no longer the real story of what truly happens it is your imagination of what could've or what you want others to believe happened. In the article how photos fuel the spread of fake news it says " The people publishing and promoting fake news routinely take photos out of context, digitally alter them, or combine them with text to manipulate readers." I believe that Crameri the photojournalist who captured this image tried to create a narrative for readers to look at and manipulate them to see what she wanted them to see. Therefor for me this image does not represent truth. Also, in the article The rules of photojournalism are keeping us from the truth it says " A technically proficient image meets the media business' goal for cost effective public attention" images like this one above can help potray a story line and create attention more effectively taking away from what is real and is not.

Quality of Light: the light of this image is dramatic to me, that is because its showing different colors while highlighting the main point of the image which is the roberry.

Rule of third:
The photographer did avoid placing the main object in the middle. As you look at the image there's two things that pop out not just one main focus. First you can see the man in the blue unphase by whats going on in the back and in the background you can see the assault thats going on.

Depth of Field: The right amount of focus is perfect in this image, because although their is blurry parts of the image it is also showing the most important parts. I believe the artist main focus was to capture the image in action.

F) after reading the article "four ways of knowing" I will say that the reason i chose these two images is because of perception. I believe that with almost everything in live perception is our reality. The perception of these two images can give everyone a different story after viewing it. Some might see things different from what I see and the image that I say are true photojournalist images to someone else could mean the opposite. Perception is always our way of knowing things.
