Final Project Neil Leifer

Image
Photo By: Shakira Martin 1 Dec 2024     I chose to do a collage of Neil Leifer most impactful images that highlights some of the incredible things he has done in his photojournalism career with sports. Adding on to the collage I  wanted to add my own personal feelings about these images and what came to my mind when I did a research therefor I created a poem to express some of those feelings.  Below is the Poem written in the middle of the collage in case it's hard to read.  A moment is a fleeting thing, unless you capture it. Or we become birds in a cage with no key— spare me the blasphemy; why would I let history escape? From boxing to basketball, we have it all in the sports world— boys and girls blossoming into adults. Let just admire their dedication, all across the nation, legends are made. We have the privilege to observe, to witness greatness for a lifetime. At the right moment in time, these photos were taken, making its place in history. these i...

What Motivates me?

Image
  A) After reading Module 12 content learning about what motivates photojournalists and reflecting on what inspires me I would like to say that some things may be different. Still, one thing is the same, the motivation to succeed for me is just as important as it is for some photojournalists. Success is important for me, but I rely on my support system and faith to accomplish all of my goals. My motivation is my family and showing my kids that their mother has succeeded even through all the trials and triumphs. For me, my motivation is being able to leave my kids with generational wealth and not allowing them to have to struggle. As for myself, I want to show myself that I can do anything I want as long as I put in the effort.  Below is my drawing of what Motivates me:  By: Shakira Martin 18 Nov 2024 B) Denzel Washington is one of my motivations. My Chat GPT Conversation:  Me: hello, I am a college student and I am losing motivation to continue with my classes. Im se...

This is my truth

 A)  In what manner did you respond to the images presented by your classmates?   Emotionally?  Intellectually?  Spiritually?  Viscerally?  What were your cumulative impressions?  After thoroughly reading through my classmate's blog post on photojournalism and Bias, I have mixed emotions about the images that were chosen. However, I do agree with the images that were chosen for truth in photojournalism, this is because most images had shown emotion and the truth about photojournalism. I also agree with Kaylee's image of the nurse and soldier kissing and what she said " The kiss, which conveys the raw emotions of millions of individuals without using words, symbolizes the nation's collective relief at the end of an awful war." this is because I believe that the truth is not always horrible and bad news sometimes the truth can be captured in the simplest moments.  B) Do you feel more confident in knowing what is truth f...

Photojournalism and Bias

Image
 A) Photo By: Ed Clark : 13 April 1945 B)  This image by Ed Clark is a very powerful image that shows a lot of emotions but as I stare at the image I see grief. The way the instrument is being played with so much emotion shows a man mourning a huge loss. After learning more about the image I can see the connection that the musician had with President  Franklin D. Roosevelt and the emotions that His death brings. Showing us how he was a loved man and a good leader. Another thing I notice about the picture is his clothes. He looks like he is in the U.S. Navy and was part of the military.  C) When starring at the image the first three principles from photography that I notice are :  The Subject Expression:  The image shows us the emotion of the subject vividly, its also expressing how vulnerable and emotional the man playing the piano is while also showing the expression of others in the background. The image is also showing the body language of everyone that ...

The Ethics of Photojournalism

Image
 A)  Image by Shakira Martin 4 Nov 2024 B) I went online I found one controversies that relate to ethics and photojournalism. The one that I found was about a photojournalist whose Integrity was questioned with an image. This one was important to me because it talks about Integrity and that's one of my biggest Ethics to live by also because integrity is huge in the photojournalism industry.  C) Integrity is the biggest Ethic/Controversy that I chose to talk about. In this Article The Case of Steve McCurry: What Is 'Truth' in Photography?  It talks about a famous photographer that is well known for his photography especially the Afghan Girl. Steve McCurry was caught in a scandal when people found out that some of his images were altered with and he was editing them to portray something different from what he captured. When confronted with this he told everyone that he was not a photojournalist that he defines his work as "virtual photo telling" however this brings ...

Women Photojournalist

Image
A)  Portrait Credit: Chris McGrath  The female photojournalist I chose to discuss on this topic is Nicole Tung. She was born in Hong Kong, in 1986. Tung graduated from New York Univ ersity. Tung is also known mostly for her work in the Middle East and Asia. What grabbed my attention about Tung is a video in which she talks about the different types of triumphs and issues that females in the photojournalist industry encounter daily. I n this video, Tung explains how women are always considered the weaker link, especially in subjects like war and photography. She also speaks about the sexual harassment that women go through and how some have a hard time speaking about it. In this video, Nicole Tung talks about her career and challenges in photojournalism " The photojournalism industry and publications tend to hire people they worked with for many years which tend to be men or think that for dangerous assignments men are better suited." It's frustrating to know that no matt...

Photojournalism Issues Today

Image
I Photos by: Shakira Martin 20 OCT 2024 I chose to talk about Palestine and Israeli war because it is not talked about enough, I wanted to shine a light on the struggles that photojournalists go through because many times a lot of us take photojournalism for granted. These photojournalists are risking their lives every day to shine a light on the issues that are going on in Gaza. For me, this is extremely important because before doing this project I wanted to talk about photojournalists in the military but it wasn't until I researched more that I realized how important all photojournalists are and the major issues they face. I believe photojournalists overall are risking their lives each day and it's so underrated. This project brought light to photojournalism and how it can impact our lives daily it also made me feel that photojournalism as a whole should be talked about more and that photojournalists should have some type of protection.  Links to the images I used and the in...
